| Tourmaline
Tourmaline,
with its rainbow mixture of colors, takes its name from the
ancient Sinhalese word turmali which means "mixed gems".
In the seventeenth century Brazilian miners exported green
tourmalines to Europe, calling them "Brazilian emeralds".
Today, pink tourmaline (along with opal) is the birthstone
for those born in October. Green tourmaline is designated
for the 10th wedding anniversary and pink for the 17th.
There are several enhancements for tourmaline. Lighter green
is produced from very dark material and deep pink to red is
produced from light pink or near colorless stones.
