Once you have versed yourself on the four C’s for choosing
a diamond, you'll need to consider putting the diamond into
the proper settings. Below are some basics that will a least
get you started. If you can master some of the following industry
terms, you will certainly impress your betrothed.
Mounting- the ring before it is set with a center stone
Head- the component holding the stone
Shank- the bottom and lower sides of the ring
Prong
setting- the stone is visible from all sides. There
are different versions of this type of head in four, six and
eight prong.
Tension-very
high fashion, 65-95 pounds of pressure hold the stone. Requires
special handling and alloy mixtures.
Bezel-Entire
stone is enclosed by a rim of metal. Partial bezels are also
used exposing parts of the stone.
Channel-Stones
are set between two parallels of metal.
Bar- Similar to channel setting, but with
a thin bar of metal between each stone.
Pave’- Literally, “paved”
style. Tiny metal beads hold each stone in place. Dates back
to early diamond setting.
