Grooms
Congratulations on an especially exciting time in your life.
Finding a special woman you want to spend the rest of your
life with is an indescribable feeling. There’s something
magical about the whole process. It has never happened to
you before and you probably have some questions about your
responsibilities as the future groom
In Emily Post’s book on Etiquette she states, “It
is doubtful if he who carries a solitaire ring enclosed in
a little square box and produces it from his pocket upon the
instant that she says “Yes”, exists outside of
the movies! As a matter of fact, the accepted suitor usually
consults his betrothed’s taste which of course may be
gratified or greatly modified, according to the length of
his purse or he may without consulting her, buy what ring
he chooses.”
The balance between gratifying her expectations and declaring
your love and devotion is a nuanced structure. Two schools
of thought exist between her selecting and your selecting
the ring. I would take the middle ground. Before navigating
the big ring decision you should determine her tastes. There
are several ways to determine what appeals to her. Ask her.
Shop with her. Ask a friend. Remember, she’s smart,
successful and definitely your equal. However, she still wants
to be treated like a lady. Ultimately, it’s a man’s
job to visit the jewelry store and make the purchase. This
gives you certain opportunities. The most important of which
is having the opportunity to exceed her expectations. Although
it’s a happy occasion it should also be taken seriously.
The engagement ring you buy is a declaration of your love
and is basically asking this woman to spend the rest of her
life with you---the ultimate commitment.
