Garnet
received its name from the Latin word for pomegranate, granatum,
because garnet crystals in rock reminded early scientists
of pomegranate seeds. Garnet occurs in all colors of the rainbow
with the exception of blue. All garnets - not just red - are
birthstones for the month of January and are designated for
the 2nd wedding anniversary. Rhodolite garnets (purple to
purplish red) are given for the 5th anniversary and tsavorite
garnets (medium light to intense deep green) are given for
the 12th
Garnets have no known enhancements.
Almandites are currently mined in Brazil, India, Sri Lanka
and Tanzania; rhodolites in Sri Lanka, Kenya and Tanzania
while tsavorites are found only in Kenya.
