| Alexandrite
Alexandrite
is the color change variety of the mineral chrysoberyl. In
daylight (flourescent light) its color is usually a slightly
grayish, yellowish or bluish green. Under incandescent (spot)
light it changes to a brownish or purplish red color. Alexandrite
has been described by poets as "emerald by day and ruby
by night" due to the show of color change from green
to red.
Alexandrite was first discovered in the Ural Mountains of
Czarist Russia. Since it was discovered close to crown prince
Alexander's birthday in 1830, the new gem was named in his
honor. Today, alexandrite (along with pearl) is the birthstone
of those born in June. Alexandrite is also designated for
the 55th wedding anniversary.
This unique stone needs no treatments to enhance its natural
beauty.
Today, Alexandrite is found primarily in Brazil, Tanzania,
Sri Lanka, India, Russia and Africa.
